All fundraisers should read Phil Cubeta's article, "Fundraiser as Philanthropic Advocate in Our Commonwealth." Phil provides prompts that are well worth your consideration, then offers advice that help you to understand your proper role in the life of a donor.

You are not a solicitor: you are an advisor, and an advocate for your donor's dreams. Do not be fooled into thinking that you can hoodwink some fool into a major gift with your savvy marketing skills and your intricately planned networking schemes.

Fundraising starts and ends with a relationship. For those of you who work in social services, think of yourselves more as case managers for the wealthy than marketers.
