Jan Mitura has resigned as executive director of Family Gateway, a nonprofit that provides services and transitional housing for homeless families with children.

Mitura is stepping down to explore new opportunities as the agency evolves after spending 22 years with the agency.

Mitura was a founding director when the agency opened to provide services to families in the mid-1980s.

Mitura and the agency under her guidance have served 12,000 citizens since 1986.

Under Mitura’s leadership, the agency established another avenue to help homeless residents transition into structured and gainful employment with the Gateway to Jobs program, which trains clients on job hunting and retaining employment.

Mitura also was behind the Family Treasures Resale Shop, a longer-term program that offered clients a place to live.

Additionally, Mitura spearheaded the Food Preparation and Food Service Training program, which will open in 2009, to offer Gateway participants a chance to learn basic food preparation skills to assist them in their search for gainful employment.

Family Gateway’s former board Chairwoman Kelly Harris will serve as acting executive director while the search for a new executive director is under way.

“Family Gateway is a testament to Jan Mitura’s vision and dedication to homeless families,” said Harris. “Her ability to foresee trends and create programs and services to respond to the needs of our clients brought Family Gateway to where it is today.”
