I am proud to announce a new partnership with the Entrepreneurs Foundation of North Texas called the Executives in Action (EIA) program. Through this new program, the Center for Nonprofit Management is able to provide member organizations with access to senior level consultants at no cost.

 What is it?

EIA supports senior executives who are in transition while engaging them in short-term, high-impact consulting projects with nonprofit organizations.

Who are the Executives? 
Executives are highly skilled individuals with 15+ years management experience who are currently transitioning between jobs and are actively seeking work in the business sector. However, they are not individuals who no longer need to work and who can afford to volunteer significant amounts of time. This program is intended to help the Executives and their families as much as the nonprofits themselves.

Where will they work?

Placements will only be made at nonprofit organizations that have applied for a Consulting Grant and been vetted by the Center.

What are the terms of the consulting projects?
Executives volunteer 1 or 2 days per week while they continue their job search. The typical placement is from 2-8 weeks at a time, but will not exceed 26 weeks. In exchange for their service, executives will receive an honorarium of $125 per day from the Center for Nonprofit Management.

How can a nonprofit apply for a Consulting Grant? 

Nonprofits may submit as many project opportunities as they wish here. The application is simple and straightforward, and should take less than 2 minutes once you have a project identified. There is no financial obligation on the part of the nonprofit that hosts an executive other than providing the supplies and management support that the executives need to complete their project.

SEATTLE -- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it is now accepting grant proposals for Round 2 of Grand Challenges Explorations, a five-year US$100 million initiative to encourage bold and unconventional research on new global health solutions. Proposals for six topics will be accepted online at www.gcgh.org/explorations through November 2, 2008.

Round 2 follows on the heels of the initiative's first funding round, which closed in May of this year, and generated nearly 4,000 applications from scientists in more than 100 countries. Two new topics are being introduced in Round 2 along with the initial four topics from Round 1.

One of the primary objectives of Grand Challenges Explorations is to involve scientists around the world who do not typically work in global health. This includes those with innovative ideas in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the developing world; people working in the private sector; and young investigators.

The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grantmaking process. Applications are two pages, and preliminary data about the proposed research are not required. In addition, the online application process has been streamlined for Round 2.

The topic areas for which proposals will be accepted in Round 2 are:

Create new vaccines for diarrhea, HIV, malaria, pneumonia, and TB.


Create new tools to accelerate the eradication of malaria.


Create new ways to protect against infectious diseases, including alternatives to traditional vaccination.


Create new drugs and delivery systems to limit the emergence of resistance in the disease-causing agent.


Create new ways to prevent or cure HIV infection that fall outside current research on vaccines and other biomedical and behavior-change strategies.


Explore the basis for latency in TB, with the goal of discovering new ways to identify and eliminate latent infection.
The foundation and an independent group of reviewers will select the most innovative proposals, and grants will be awarded within approximately three months from the proposal submission deadline. Initial grants will be $100,000 each. Projects showing success will have the opportunity to receive additional funding of $1 million or more. Round 1 grants are expected to be announced in October.

Nominations Invited for $1 Million Gates Award for Global Health

The Gates Award for Global Health was established by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to reward and exemplify organizations which have developed processes for improving health, especially in resource poor settings, with measurable results. The Award recognizes past achievements and the promise of continuing activity and improvement.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Oct. 31, 2008.

The Award will be presented in Washington, D.C. at a special Awards Ceremony during the Global Health Council's Annual International Conference, May 26-30, 2009.

Walgreens Community Giving
Most Walgreen grants are made to eligible nonprofits working in local Walgreen communities. A portion of the budget is reserved for select national organizations. Walgreens awards grants in the following program areas: non-hospital based health agencies, Walgreens One-on-One tutorial programs in inner city neighborhoods where we operate, and a small share is reserved for eligible community and social service agencies that serve areas where Walgreens has a significant presence. Health is our major area of focus, and the largest share of our annual contributions budget is allocated to programs that address the health needs of our patients.

Lego Children's Fund
The LEGO Children's Fund will provide grants quarterly for collaborative programs, either in part or in total, with a special interest in providing matching funds to leverage new dollars into the receiving organization. We will give priority consideration to programs that both meet our goals and are supported in volunteer time and effort by our employees.

The Foundation awards grants to qualified tax-exempt organizations (as determined under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code) including educational organizations as defined in USC 26 § 170 (C) with specific, identifiable needs primarily in these areas of support:

• Early childhood education and development


• Technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities


• Sport or athletic programs that concentrate on underserved youth

Grant Amount: Most awards are between $500 and $5,000

Gannett Foundation Community Grants
The Gannett Foundation's mission is to invest in the future of the communities in which Gannett does business, and in the future of our industry. They value projects that take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighborhood improvement, economic development, youth development, community problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged
people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.

Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations in neighborhoods where Gannett has a newspaper or tv station.

Preferred Approach: Complete the application form available from the website, attach your proposal and send it to the newspaper publisher or TV station in your area. A list of newspapers and TV stations is available on the website.Deadline: There are three deadlines per year: January 15th, May 15th and August 15th.
