Jobs for Change

Jobs for Change seeks to spark a national movement toward careers in the common good. Their vision statement is below.

Find out more here:
http://jobs.change.org/vision

Jobs for Change is being launched at a time of both crisis and opportunity.

The crisis we face is rooted not only in our faltering economy but also in our national failure to confront major challenges, from education to energy to health care. At the same time, President Obama has inspired renewed interest in public service, providing a historic opportunity to mobilize people to address problems that have been ignored for too long.

The mission of Jobs for Change is to help take full advantage of this opportunity by recruiting a new generation of leaders into the nonprofit, government, and social enterprise sectors.

We believe

People are the most important factor in advancing social change. To address the social and environmental problems we face, we need to attract a diverse range of people and the most promising leaders from across the country to work on issues both local and global in scope.
To attract these people, we need to enhance the social sector's ability to recruit, develop, and retain talent. Too many people interested in a career in service do not end up or remain in the sector because of a range of obstacles that include misperceptions about work and compensation, insufficient information about how to take the first steps, or limited recruiting resources from budget-strapped organizations. We need to address these issues.
Innovative businesses should join as partners with nonprofits and government in the pursuit of social good. One of the most promising movements in social change is the use of business as a vehicle for advancing the common good, and the rapidly expanding social enterprise sector should be embraced and encouraged.
This is a moment of incredible potential. If together we harness the renewed interest in public service by recruiting and developing the next generation of leaders in the social sector, we can overcome the challenges we face and build a better future for us all.

Obama Engages Nonprofit Community

Public Allies
Obama taps officials from Echoing Green and Public Allies to foster innovation in his administration
Thanks to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.com: for this encouraging news about the way that the Obama administration is beginning to engage the nonprofit community:

Two Charity Heads Among Leaders Advising Obama on Innovation

Two charity leaders have been appointed to a group of more than 30 people that has been asked to help the incoming Obama administration devise an “innovation agenda.”

They are: Cheryl Dorsey, president of Echoing Green, in New York, which provides fellowships to entrepreneurial nonprofit leaders; and Paul Schmitz, president of Public Allies, in Milwaukee, which trains young people for nonprofit and public-service careers."

Their group — the Technology, Innovation, and Government Reform Policy Working Group — will recommend ways to modernize government; use technology to expand the economy and solve pressing national problems; and promote “active citizenship” and government partnerships with civil-society organizations, according to the Obama transition project’s Web site.

What does an Obama administration mean for the nonprofit sector?

What does an Obama administration mean for the nonprofit sector?

How will this new President work with this sector that now controls nearly 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)?

Will he build on the work of the Bush Administration's Office of Community and Faith-Based Initiatives? Or will he wipe the slate clean and start anew?

Will his proposal to provide college loans to students in return for community service be implemented -- and how will it be received by the nonprofit community?

Will his health care proposals pass -- and how will they affect nonprofits that provide medical care to the uninsured? Will universal health coverage be the ultimate game changer for the health segment of our sector?

How can we, as social entrepreneurs, prepare to engage the next President in our shared mission of making this the best country that it can be?

Obama's gonna snatch my cash!

Jeff Brooks at Donor Power Blog reassures us that:

  • Elections have little impact on charitable contributions.
  • We largely aren't competing for the same donors. Political donors are typically younger, more likely to be male, and have higher incomes.
  • While political fundraising grows to new records with each presidential election, charitable giving also continues to grow. Chances are, new political donors likely become better prospects for charitable giving.
